Hermostasis

Videoed performance with Jayne Cherry, 2025

13. 52 minutes

Videography by Stuart Calvin

Sound design: Isaac Gibson

This project was funded by a grant from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and during late summer 2025 was filmed in several locations, including Jaynes back garden and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Belfast. Stuart Calvin was the videographer and Dr Isaac Gibson created a soundscape for it.

The Cailleach was an all-powerful and feared woman. The myths that relate to her are plenty and she has a special affinity with locations in the west of Ireland, such as the ‘Hags Chair’ on the Cliffs of Moher and Carrowmore passage tomb in Sligo. Her archetype should resonate with all woman- to not go into your elder years quietly and obediently- to not disappear or be silenced, but to rejoice in your knowledge and years of experience and to stand up and be counted.
